What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic treatment that uses light, flowing movements to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. Using specialised pumping, rhythmic and spiral techniques, MLD helps support the body’s lymphatic and immune systems while promoting deep relaxation and wellbeing.

The Dr Vodder Method of MLD

The Dr Vodder method is a highly specialised and advanced form of Manual Lymphatic Drainage. It works by gently stretching and moving the skin in rhythmic and precise motions to stimulate lymph flow and assist the removal of excess fluid from the tissues.

Unlike traditional massage, the technique works with the skin rather than on the muscles, using precise pressure and movement in the direction of lymph flow. No oils are used, making the treatment suitable even for sensitive skin.

Treatment typically begins around the neck, where major lymphatic pathways connect, before addressing other areas of the body. The slow, rhythmic nature of the technique is deeply calming and often leaves clients feeling relaxed and restored.

Benefits of MLD

Manual Lymphatic Drainage may help to:

  • Reduce swelling, fluid retention, and puffiness
  • Support the immune system and encourage detoxification
  • Relieve muscular aches, joint discomfort, and tension
  • Improve circulation and promote healing after injury or surgery
  • Ease sinus congestion and respiratory discomfort
  • Support digestive health and reduce bloating
  • Promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve wellbeing
  • Encourage healthier-looking skin and assist post-surgical recovery

MLD is also commonly used to support recovery following cosmetic or medical procedures, sports injuries, and conditions affecting the lymphatic system, including lymphoedema and lipoedema.

Understanding the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is a vital part of the body’s immune and circulatory systems. It is made up of lymph vessels, lymph nodes, and organs such as the spleen and tonsils, which work together to remove waste, fight infection, and maintain healthy fluid balance within the body.

Unlike the bloodstream, the lymphatic system does not have its own pump and relies on movement and breathing to keep fluid circulating effectively. Modern lifestyles, stress, and poor circulation can sometimes cause the system to become sluggish, contributing to fatigue, swelling, bloating, and lowered immunity.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps stimulate the natural flow of lymph fluid, supporting the body’s ability to heal, cleanse, and protect itself naturally.

What is Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT)?

Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a specialised treatment programme used alongside Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) to support clients living with primary or secondary lymphoedema, lipoedema, or phleboedema.

CDT is designed to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic flow, and help manage symptoms effectively through a personalised treatment approach.

A comprehensive CDT programme may include:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
  • Multi-layer compression bandaging
  • Advice on suitable compression garments
  • Skin care using gentle, non-allergenic creams and lotions
  • Tailored exercise guidance

Nutritional advice, including support with diet, supplements, and herbal medicine

Treatment Phases

CDT typically begins with an intensive treatment phase, during which clients may receive regular MLD sessions combined with multi-layer bandaging over a period of up to six weeks, depending on the severity of the condition.

This is followed by a maintenance phase, where treatments are usually reduced to once or twice weekly to help maintain results and prevent the oedema from worsening. During this stage, compression garments are often recommended as part of ongoing care.

Initial Consultation

Your first lymphoedema consultation is a detailed assessment lasting up to 90 minutes. During this appointment, your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals will be discussed thoroughly, allowing a personalised treatment plan to be created based on your individual needs and the severity of the oedema.
